Ethical AI also means ensuring that AI systems don’t unfairly advantage or disadvantage certain groups. For example, if an AI is used in hiring processes, it should not discriminate based on gender, race, or age.

An Example of Ethical AI in Action

Let’s take a chatbot being used by a student to ask about Institute A’s holiday list. In this case, the chatbot’s answer should contain data that is specific to Institute A and it should also:

  • Ensure it’s not revealing private information about specific individuals’ holiday plans.
  • Provide the information in a format accessible to all users, including those with disabilities.
  • Be programmed to avoid biases, such as assuming certain religious holidays are more important than others.

Typically, when users submit requests to a learning bot or agent, the ethical considerations go beyond just data processing. The AI should:

  • Be transparent about its capabilities and limitations.
  • Avoid making critical decisions without human oversight, especially in sensitive areas like student assessments or resource allocation.
  • Be regularly audited for fairness and accuracy.

When training a bot on institution-specific information:

  • Institutions should have clear policies about what information can be put into AI systems.
  • There should be mechanisms to detect and prevent sensitive or proprietary data in public AI models.
  • If proprietary information is used to train AI, there should be clear agreements about data ownership and usage rights.

What are the Ethical Implications of AI?
